Iron bike 2012
This year I was not sure if will be able to do the 77 kilometers. I had not done the tour before this year and did not a lot of kilometers on the bike. Just had the o-tour as kind of training race.
Saturday it was raining heavily almost the whole day. Luckily the race is always on Sunday and Sunday morning sun was shining in Einsiedeln. This means that all the roads upwards were dry but downhills mostly wet or very wet.
This year I enjoyed the race the most since I participate for several reasons: it was nice weather, downhills was wet and I had enough power this year.
And there was something else: this year I had to start in the very last group and there the field is not so crowded. So you do not have to fear constantly that somebody is coming from your back and over turning you downhills. Was much fun!
This year I started the third time for this bike race. Start and finish are just 500 meters from my home, so its a home race for me. A lot of neighbours attend this race too. It has three categories. I start for the smalest one. It goes over 55 kilometers and 2300 meters in altitude.
This year was my fastest race since I participat. I was 3 minutes faster than last year. This year I did a lot of training, especially the time when I went home with the bike from the office. This was enough training, so I had enough power to go as fast as possible from beginning to the end of the race.
It is much more fun if the race is not so exhausting. Additionally the weather was wounderful. Nice race this year and a lot of participants. I went to the start 15 minutes before starting time and had already to queue up very far behind the start line, but after 10 minutes I was in the middle of the crowd.
This years race was much more fun for me than last years. I was not so good prepared than last year, but did not want to make the same mistake once more. This all together made the race a real fun.
I had 30 minutes longer than last year which for me is not worth mentioning. Last year I started to fast. I wanted to go with the masses which was a bad mistake. After a few kilometers my power was all gone. After little more than half of the race I were almost not able to keep on the bike and the rest of the race was a horrible painful torture.
This year I had no time for training because I was always jogging. At least I were able to make up to 100 kilometers of training. Normally much to less to qualify for starting but I did a lot of running and made some small test tours with the bike. At a whole I felt prepared but wanted to go my own speed and make enougth breaks.
Thats what I did and it became a wonderful race with very nice, cold but sunny weather. I made lot of breaks either for eating or for changing clothes and had enougth reserves to give full power until the end. Nice race! I will try the same next year! And my conclusions: you must not give 100% at the race day. If you are well prepared you will be fast, you must not power out yourself and make a bloody race!
I had more kilometers done this year than ever before and I expected just a short trip of about three hours. But there were over 600 participants in my group and the race went straight on from the beginning.
I gave what I had but could not avoid to be overtaken until the last meters. This race was much more exhausting than I had expected. But when you have finished you are proud of your performance independent of the rank you have.
For the next season I want to do more kilometers and try to start for the next higher class. Mountain biking is one of my favourite sports. Its a wounderful feeling to rave down a hill, sometimes a little dangerous and rushing adrenalin
