Did a long but beautiful bike tour today: Einsiedeln, Schönenberg, Menzingen, Zug, Küssnacht, Weggis, Vitznau, Brunnen, Schwyz, Einsiedeln.
The tour is about 105 kilometers and very beautiful. Starting in Einsiedeln I often go down to Schindellegi and from there to Menzingen either directly or over Schönenberg. Both villages are on the hills above lake Zürichsee.
From Menzingen it goes down to Zug at Lake Zug. Zug is a lot deeper located than Einsiedeln, so sprint has already progressed far over there in comparison to Einsiedeln. From Zug around lake Zug back to Küssnacht, a very famous village located exactly beweet lake Zug and lake Vierwaldstättersee.
In Küssnacht I took this photo of a huge blooming bush. I don’t know its name but it was very impressive in its current blooming state. Lake Vierwaldstättersee is the most famous lake in Switzerland. Its great and I took my route from Küssnacht over Weggis and Vitznau, beautiful holiday locations to Brunnen.
In Brunnen I had already 80 kilometers and made a short break. The last 25 kilometers were more up than down and I was already quite exhausted, but managed to reach Einsiedeln 4 and a half hours after I had started.
Here is the result. It took me only minutes to implement it and as you can see in the different sheets, I have also implemented the Julia set in the same workbook.
The sheets are for 3 different resolutions and you see that the range where both sets are visible is from -2.2 / -1.5 to 0.8 / 1.5 for the Mandelbrot set and from -1.8 / -1.5 to 1.8 / 1.5 for the Julia Set.
I realized the different colors with conditional formatting which is a nice feature of Microsoft Excel. Points which are part of the set are black, points which are not part of the set are colored. The color depends on the number of iterations necessary to decide that they are diverting and is going from red and yellow to white.
You can download the Excel workbook from here. You might have to allow the basic script!
I am a fan of the Mandelbrot set since I have seen it the first time. I developed a screen saver for windows which displays the Mandelbrot set and zooms in randomly.
I also tried to develop something similar for the iPhone but did not succeed for the time. When I was investigating possibilities to draw lines in HTML code, I saw that with HTML 5 there is a new tag <Canvas> which allows exactly what I need.
Here is the result. I have created a page which shows the Mandelbrot set and the same for the Julia set. Both are very impressive. You can zoom in by clicking somewhere in the graph and even move the graph with the mouse.
Here is the page with the Mandelbrot set and
here is the page with the Julia Set.
I had my best time until now. This was the fourth Engadiner ski marathon I did. The race was very fast this year and it was quite easy. I was not exhausted like in other years. Only the very last kilometer at the end was hard.
I am still in group „Allgemein A“ which is not bad but would like to get once fast enough to start in the „Elite“ group. But this maybe will never happen.
The whole event is really funny. We have to start at 3 am in the morning and go by car to Landquart from where we take a 2 hours train to St. Moritz and from there its another ride on a bus of about 20 minutes.
This lets us arrive in Maloja just before 7:00 where we put our skis to the start to be in one of the front lines when the race begins. We booked breakfast in „Maloja Palace“ which is the very best option for waiting until the race starts at 8:50.
This year I did more skating than before and the marathon in Einsiedeln was a very good preparation. The marathon in Einsiedeln is much harder and I was at my very end in the finish.
First time I was in Bennau for skiing. Its just 5 minutes with the car on the other side of Einsiedeln. I was surprised, how good you can ski there.
There are 2 escalators in parallel and a small beginners lift for kids. The slope is not too steep and not too flat so you can go down with quite a speed.
With my new skis it was much fun and I even tried to go down in the deep snow besides the prepared slope. But there was just too much snow. I think it was almost one meter. So much that you almost vanished in it.
Living in Einsiedeln is just great with all this possibilities you have in summer and winter.
I just bought a network camera and was wondering how easy it is to install such a thing at home. Network cameras are very cheap nowadays. I just payed CHF 130,– including delivery. My model is a wireless model which has motion detection, email delivery and a night modus.
You have to connect it to power and enable the device on your router and it is connected. There is a nice web interface to change settings and you can just browse the IP and see the video. It even comes with an iPhone app which does video streaming.
Making it accessible from outside was much harder and cost me a couple of nights. Finally it worked when I assigned the camera a fix IP address and put it into the de-militarized zone in my router. With a normal Cablecome internet contract you do not get a fix IP address, so you have to use DynDNS.com or No-IP.com to solve this problem.
But now it works, and after having installed everything, I must say that it was easier than expected.
Invent Human Resources
When I went to Switzerland for work, I was positively surprised by the professionalism of Swiss companies. I think, the difference was coming from the internationality of Swiss companies in comparison to Austrian companies.
This has changed meanwhiles. Austria is now a gate to the eastern european countries and has gained a big market share in this area.
One of the very positive examples is Iventa human resources consulting, a company which is one of the leading human resources management companies offering HR consulting and HR advertising in Austria and CEE.
Iventa is a typical example of an Austrian company living this business model: reinventing the old connections to the eastern european markets. Vienna is becoming once again the hub from west to east, the center of europe. More info about Iventa.
This was my sports year 2012. I started writing down my sports activities last year and it is a little surprise, that I did such a lot this year.
But without any question I did more than in previous years. Reason might be that my kids are older and I have more time. Reason could be that I did more different types of sport this year. I also started triathlon and you have to practice more for all three disciples. Reason could also be that I started writing down my activities.
Approximately 6 weeks ago I found out that there is the possibility to do 2000 kilometers in all different categories together. And this was of course another reason which motivated me enormous.
I saw that there are only 70 kilometers missing on racing bike and managed to finish the missing 70 kilometers one sunny November Sunday. Same with biking and in December with skating.
And whats about next year. Next year I have to do more than! Thats for sure. My target is again 1000 kilometers racing bike, 500 kilometer skating, 250 mountain bike but more running. I will try to run also 250 kilometers. Thats my target for next year. And of course all the nice races I have already participated this year.
I already started today with 2 kilometers of crawling in the renovated indoor swimming pool in Unteriberg.
