Why is estimating the effort necessary for a software development project so much more complicated than estimating the construction of a building? Because a software development project is a new project with mostly new people and often new technology for every new project.
Once again I had to experience that the estimation for a project was too optimistic. It is easy to estimate the expectable effort if yourself will be the person who has to realise the project. I remember that all estimations I did for myself where exact.
But as soon as the project is larger and is about a new business area, you have to do more work. You will have to do different kinds of estimations, for example a SCRUM story point estimation, a comparison with a similar project, a function point analysis and so on.
Now, there is the cone of uncertainty which tells us that an estimation done before the projects requirements were investigated properly could be far far away from the real effort you will spend. And the estimation will only come down to a more realistic value if you do another estimation after the requirements are clearer or even after you have started developing.
As I had an injury beginning of this year, I was not able to do as much sport as in the last couple of years. In fact, I was not allowed to do running and also did less on my bike and participated no races this year.
Instead I made some lessons in golf in June and went almost every weekend to the near golf court in Studen, just 15 minutes by car.
Golf is really a sport for everybody, you will not start sweating. But this is also a benefit because you can go to the green even after you already spent several hours on the bike or somewhere else because golf is more relaxing than exhausting.
I had about 6 lessons together with 5 other guys and had much fun with the trainer and the colleagues. I got lent a good golf bag from my neighbour, so the only thing I had to buy for being able to do this new sport was a trousers, because of the dress code on the court.
Seems that I will stick to this new sport though meanwhiles I am back running (not such a lot of kilometres like in the last years) and back on the bike and I also started again doing some fitness in a studio.
NoSQL-Database is something quite new. I heard the first time about it a couple months ago and even read an interesting article about the topic which was in truth too complicated for me.
But recently I run into the question who a web shop like Amazon is storing its data. Surprisingly this is no secret and Amazon has published a description about their technology and you can even download an API to connect to the database and you can create your own DynamoDB on the Amazon cloud.
Here is a short summary about the concept in German. I had no time to translate it into English so far. Hope it is correct from a technical point of view!
I have a new hobby. In March I had an accident while jogging in the wood and had to go to hospital for a medical treatment. Since then I had to reduce my sportive activities which was not easy a the beginning.
Meanwhiles it is better and I am even happy because I spend more time with my kids again. But I also have a new hobby. Together with a friend we have rented a small room in the next building and do painting there.
This is a funny hobby. I was quite a good painter in school and even won once a school championship. But since then I lever practiced it. But my friend has this hobby since more than ten years, so once a month we meet in our room and drink beer and paint.
This is one of the good paintings I have done so far. Its not easy!
Starting from Einsiedeln there are a lot of mountain bike tours. You can go into all directions. But one of the most beautiful ones is if you go to the hill which is between Einsiedeln and lake Zürich.
From there you have a extraordinary view over the whole lake, back to Einsiedeln and the mountains and you can even see Zürich itself which is about 30 kilometres away.
Once a year there is a big mountain bike race called „Iron bike“ which starts and ends in Einsiedeln. The tour goes up and down over several mountains in total more than 2300 meters of altitude. The first up is this hill with the lake Zürich on your left.
But while participating at the race you barely have the time to enjoy the view, so better to make the tour on a sunny sunday morning.
A couple of weeks ago it was the first time that I saw and heard about Conchita. The first image makes you confused. Something never seen: a woman with a beard.
I saw the small spot on a TV docu about the most confusing people or something like that. Weeks later I was surprised to see on TV that Austria has nominated this very same woman for the song contest. It was 2 days before the song contest took place and I thought that I must not miss the contest this time.
Normally I do not look the contest because I am not very interested in this kind of music. But if something like this and from my very country is participating, it is a must. So I watched the contest from the beginning and was absolutely surprised from the performance of Conchita. She was starting as number 11 and after I saw here, all the other candidates coming later were just boring and the only thing I wanted was to see Conchita again.
Obviously Conchita was ranked number 2 from the book makers, so maybe there was a chance for here to even win. Reason enough for me to watch the whole thing until the end. When the counting of votes began, it immediately became interesting because from the very beginning, Austria was a front runner.
When Austria took over the first place and kept staying there, it got more and more exciting. I was seldom so proud of my country like that very Saturday night, when Conchita won the contest! This is a sign for Europe that we are one of the most tolerant and modern regions in the world. I am not sure if something like this, that a bearded woman gets voted to win a song contest could happen in any other country or area in the world. I am proud of Europe and proud of Austria to have the courage to have nominated Conchita.
This year winter started perfectly. There was already enough snow beginning of December so that it was possible to do cross country skating in Einsiedeln.
But after Christmas the weather suddenly became so warm that most of the snow was gone within a couple of days: no skiing anymore.
I took the opportunity and used my snow shoes I had bought a couple of years ago and rarely used to walk onto this hill called Spital in the back of Einsiedeln.
The hill or mountain is not hight, barely above timberline and you can start walking in the village. I took a photo from top of the hill. In the background there is lake Sihlsee.
The name of the hill is funny because Spital means in German hospital and you can see the hospital of Einsiedeln from over there.
We made our yearly winter holidays again in Mauterndorf, Austria. Luckily in this area of the Alpes there was a lot of snow this year.
Though this winter was much too warm, a couple of weeks ago it was snowing very very heavily in the southern region of Austria. I was surprised because I have never seen so much snow in this skiing area. Especially in the skiing region Katschberg / Aineck there was extremely much snow.
On the picture you can see me in the middle of a famous slope in Katschberg. It is famous for its steepness, and because there were not too many people skiing, it was possible to carve down the hill using the full range of the slope, left to right.
Katchberg is the best skiing area in the region where I grew up. But one day we made a trip to one of the bigger areas reachable within an hour with the car. This time we choose Schladming where the last winter world championship was held. Schladming is great, one of the best skiing areas I ever saw.
