Today, easter Monday I did one of my favorite tours for race bike. It is quite a fast tour but has more than 1000 meters difference in heigt.
You go from Einsiedeln down to lake Zürichsee, from there to Siebnen, a small village a little off the lake and at the foot of the mountains. From there it goes up to the small lake Wäggitalersee. A few kilometers before you reach the lake, there is Vorderthal from where it goes more up the hill, to Sattelegg.
Up on Sattelegg, you just can go down to Sihlsee lake and from there it is just a few kilometers back to Einsiedeln. Very nice round. I had 2 hours and 2 minutes. Very nice tour!
This winter, we had very few snow. December was ok. It was possible to ski and do cross country skiing from beginning of December. Christmas time was also tremendous with lot of snow and cold weather.
But then there were 2 or 3 periods of about a few days where it was very warm and snow was melting away. February and March was over weeks not enough snow to do cross country skiing in Einsiedeln.
Though conditions were not so good, I was able to do more than 400 kilometers cross country skiing. But mid of march, as one can see on the picture, snow was away. After Engadiner ski marathon, I was not in the mood any more to do skiing.
So I started biking and running again. And I were able to bring my physical condition very well over the winter. I already went from office to Einsiedeln by bike once and also did my first run from office to home this year. Worth to mention is also that I started with this heavy run without any training before.
It was not as cold as last year. We again started at 3 am in the morning, drove with the car to Landquart, continued by train to St. Moritz and from there you have to go by bus to Maloja, to the start of this famous race.
The ugly thing is, that you have to wait in Maloja about more than an hour until you can start and there is no tent where you can sit down and have warm. And all the restaurents are full, almost exploding. Last year we found an open church where we waited. But this year, this church was closed. Luckily we found that the entrance hall of the local community office was open. So we sat down on the floor and waited there.
The race was very very hard. The snow was ok at the first 20 kilometers, but then is was so slow, that the rest of the race was a fight against the snow. I was very exhausted, when I finished. The snow on the last 500 meters was artificial snow, deep and heavy. On the last 100 meters I really played with the idea to put off the skiers and walk the remaining hundret meters.
I needed 3 hours and 40 seconds. My wish was to stay below 3 hours. Almost reached. But the whole day was a great advanture. Looking forward to next year!
Every hear, we go for a week to Mauterndorf, the small village in the mountains in Austria, where I was born and grew up. This year, the weather and the snow were very good. There were a few days, when sun was not shining, but even then, we were skiing and had fun.
Our target for this year was, that the younger daughter also learns skiing. For this reason, we sent both girls to a skiing training in the local skiing school. Lia was not convinced, but Zoe joined for a whole day. And after that, she was also able to ski alone. Target reached!
I did skiing every day, for at least 2 hours, and we tested all 3 local skiing areas: Speiereck, Fanningberg and Katschberg. Fantastic skiing areas. Once I even hiked to the top of Speiereck which is 2400 meters altitude together with my brother. And on the same day, we did several skiing tours down Restalm, through deep snow. It was like 20 years ago, when we did this each winter.
Einsiedler Ski Marathon 2011
There was not enough snow this year, so the competition was held in a near village and the distance was reduced to 30 km instead to a normal marathon distance.
Was a great race with very good conditions, nice weather and icy slope. I was in much better physical condition than last year. I did the 42 kilometers on the normal route here in Einsiedeln for training in less than 3 hours. And this already a few weeks before the competition.
But the place I gained was not very good. It had not many participants, only good sports man. In such a race it is hard to gain a good pace. But what shalls! I do it just for fun. And was great fun!
Schwedentritt is the name of the cross country skiing slope I use normally for training. It is just 200 meters away from our flat. I just have to cross a street and there I am. The trace has 4 different distances: 3, 12, 16 and 21 kilometers. Normally I do the longest distance, but at the beginning, in November or December, I start with 12 kilometers.
The trace is not too easy, goes up and down which makes it hard to do. The trace in Studen, 6 kilometers away is much easier.
This year I did the first time 2 rounds, 42 kilometers. I had less than 3 hours, which is good for me but nothing compared to the real good runners. Theay do it in almost half the time. But technik is everything and I were able to improve my technik for another time this year. I am not getting dired any more. Can run and run and run …
Wow, that was hard, much harder than expected. I heard about this marathon and thought if I were able to do Luzern marathon, I should also be able to do this one, a month later.
But wrong thinking. Frauenfelder marathon is much more than a marathon. There are only a few starters, maybe 250 or something like that. It was already quite cold, raining a little bit at the beginning.
But what is really hard is that it is going up and down, up and down, up and down. You are running from hill to hill, from Frauenfeld to Wil, always going more up than anything else until Wil.
I started much to fast but did not want to be the last runner. And at the beginning I did not feel too bad. But at kilometer 18 or something like that, it started hurting in my legs and in Wil I almost were not able to run any more, such a hurt in my legs. I had to stop in Wil, after half the distance. Were running much too fast. Had less than 2 hours for 21 kilometers though it was going up and down. Much too fast.
I sat into the next train and went back by train to Frauenfeld. Was very unhappy, but think will retry next year. But then I have to do much much more training on long distances. Much more …
Luzern Marathon 2010
This year was the first time I were able to run the whole distance of the marathon. The last two years I always had to walk for a few hundred meters because I was so exhausted that it just was not possible to run any more. Of course, I restarted running after a while, but in my opinion, you have not really finished, if you have to walk. Even if its just a short distance.
My time this year was 4 hours and 7 minutes. Once more I were not able to do it in less than 4 hours. Maybe next year.
The reason for the better time is clear: first I had more long distance runs in my legs, I did about 4 times 30 kilometers and the best time for this distance was about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Second I have this year in general a better condition because I did a lot of kilometers on my street bike. Third, I did less training overall. This year, I stopped going to the fitness studio twice a week and did the last couple of months sport only at the weekend. Fourth, I made a break of about 4 weeks before the marathon, to have enough time to regenerate (though this was not planned). And then, I cared more about drinking and eating during the marathon itself. And finally, I started slower. I really forced myself to go slow the first 20 kilometers.
As always, it was a lot of fun. Doing a marathon is my new passion. In 3 weeks, there would be another one in Frauenfeld. I will try to start there too.
