Luzern Marathon 2010

This year was the first time I were able to run the whole distance of the marathon. The last two years I always had to walk for a few hundred meters because I was so exhausted that it just was not possible to run any more. Of course, I restarted running after a while, but in my opinion, you have not really finished, if you have to walk. Even if its just a short distance.

My time this year was 4 hours and 7 minutes. Once more I were not able to do it in less than 4 hours. Maybe next year.

The reason for the better time is clear: first I had more long distance runs in my legs, I did about 4 times 30 kilometers and the best time for this distance was about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Second I have this year in general a better condition because I did a lot of kilometers on my street bike. Third, I did less training overall. This year, I stopped going to the fitness studio twice a week and did the last couple of months sport only at the weekend. Fourth, I made a break of about 4 weeks before the marathon, to have enough time to regenerate (though this was not planned). And then, I cared more about drinking and eating during the marathon itself. And finally, I started slower. I really forced myself to go slow the first 20 kilometers.

As always, it was a lot of fun. Doing a marathon is my new passion. In 3 weeks, there would be another one in Frauenfeld. I will try to start there too.

It was raining the whole Saturday and had only 6 degrees above zero, means that on the mountains there was already snow. The largest distance which goes up to 1700 meters was cancelled therefore. I bought overshoes and a cap wearable beneath the helm to be ready for the cold weather.

On Sunday, the day of the race, it was not raining any more, at least not so heavily and the start of my group was 8:50 am. There were about 500 participants in my group. I started as one of the latest because I came very late to the start which is just 500 meters from my home away.

The weather was no problem, you do not feel the cold if you have good clothes which hold out the water. I needed 6 hours and 3 minutes for the 77 kilometers distance. And I felt very good, when I arrived the finish. Was not tired, had the feeling that I still could go for an hour.

This race was one of the most exciting races I ever had. Parts of the race were a mud-wrestling, especially the down-hill distances. I crashed two times and everybody was brown from foot to head including the bikes. After the first very muddy down-hill, there was a stop to clean the bike which was good, because it was filled with dirt over and over.

After I had reached the most highest altitude of the race, I had to readjust my breaks and was so much out of power that I allmost fell. And there was also a time when I allmost capitulated, but it was all because I ate to less. The last 10 kilometers I regained strengh and the rest was just fun. No pain in the legs, nothing, I felt like a machine and were able to make a sprint to the finish line.

My second time I started to this race. Last year it was very hot. But this year, the weather was very nice, not hot but also not raining. Very nice. My run was very good. I am satisfied.

This year I even had power enough for the last 5 kilometers where I had big problems last year. Of course, I could be better, but the race was ok.

In between, I think it was kilometer 10 I had a small problem. I had to go to a toilet, immediatley. So the only thing I could do was jumping into a maize feeld and doing what was to do there.

So, I lost about 3 minutes and had to fight a lot to come back to the position in the race where I was before. Shit happens!

This is one of my home races becaus start and end are just 500 meters away from my home. I don’t like this home race very much because there are not such a lot of starters and a lot of people who are just looking and participating.

I want to be faster every year, and this year I trained more, so normally I should have been faster, but I managed only to finish half a minute faster than last year. Does not matter. It is just for fun. Was very hot, the last kilometer, there was not fresh wind and I really thought, that I can not finished because of the heat.

The funny thing with this race is that there is also a category for kids and my older girls started in this category. I really smiled seeing here with a totally read face coming back to the finish after 1.4 kilometers of exhausting running. But she was very proud of herself and me too. Very well done! I did not expect it!

Mythen

Every year I am on top of Mythen, at least once. Normally I do it as fast as possible without having anything to eat with me, only a bottle of water. I can go up from bottom, parking place to top in less than an hour.

My personal record is 55 minutes. And I am becoming faster year by year. My record was this 55 minutes up and 25 minutes down. But down is little bit dangerous. You can hurt yourselfes very ugly on the feet. Better being careful.

The fascinating on this mountain is that I am there with car in 15 minutes, so in less than 3 hours I can start at home, climb it and be back home. I really do it most the time after coming home from office. In summer, when it gets dark not before 10 pm, it is easily doable and not so hot any more.

Have you ever heard of finger shoes? No! They look very funny and I ordered a pair a couple of weeks ago. I have read in a newspaper that normal running shoes are not so good for your legs because the buffer is to large. The large buffer is not normal for the legs. The buffer move the burden from the feet to the knees which is not optimal.

Shoes without the buffer are more aligned to normal movement of the legs. Obviously there are already some running shoes on the market without or with a smaller buffer. One of this shoes is the finger shoe from VIBRAM.

I tried the finger shoes and I am quite surprised how different running is with these shoes. The first time, I could feel every step in my head because my muscles did not buffer the step. But the second time, this feeling was already gone and I already dared to make a run of about 20 kilometers without any problem The difference is that the lower legs are more used and get earlier dired.

I would not use the finger shoes for running a race or doing distances more than 20 kilometers though I have heard that some people do exactly that. But these shoes are a new experience I would not like to miss. Try it!

Klöntalersee

This was the first year, we did this race. I have heard of it by accident. Lake Klöntal is about 60 kilometers away from Einsiedeln. You have to travel with car about an hour though it is just behind the moutains. But with the car you have to go around the mountains. The lake is located at the base of one of the highest mountains here. I can see this mountain from my home and it is more than 3000 meters high.

The race is along the lake, 12.8 kilometers in distance and half of the turn is in the wood going heavily up and down. The race itself is organized very nicely. There are only about 100 participants and after the race all participants get a saucage and beer. The organizer created a campfire at the shore of the lake and we were sitting there all together until deep in the night. Very nice race! We will come back next year.

First time I climbed a mountain this year. Very beautiful weather and very warm today. I decided to climb a mountain. My preferred mountain is Kleiner Mythen. It is just 20 minutes away by car.

This was the last mountain I climbed last year, in November, and it is the first mountain, I climbed this year.

But today, I did it a little bit slower than last time. I was quite exhausted, because yesterday we had done a very strong tour with the racing bike. And in addition, Kleiner Mythen is the last 10 minutes very dangerous. Here is a foto from the top of Kleiner Mythen back to its brother Grosser Mythen.
