A sportive year is ending. I did my last workout on my cross country skies today and finished with it the sport activities of the year 2013.
Since I started tracking my activities with www.endomondo.com last year, I do much more sport. At least, I have the feeling and always a good reason to go out for a ride on my bike or for a run. This year, I did even more than last year, partly because I participated at Gigathlon, but partly also because I am tracking my workouts.
In total I did 2500 kilometers, not counting skiing and so on where you don’t measure the distance. About 1000 on the bike on the street, 500 on the mountain bike, which was much more than last year, 600 cross country skiing, 250 running and a bit skating and swimming.
Looking forward to next year, which I will start next weekend. My target is to do more running and the same from all the others disciplines.
Cross country skiing
This year, on 1st of December there was already enough snow in Einsiedeln so that it was possible to open the cross country skiing slope. I started immediately with the winter training. The weather was sunny and the slope very well prepared.
This morning I started very early, at 8 am and sun was just raising when I was already behind lake Sihlsee. I stopped and quickly did a photo of the beautiful panorama with the lake and the mountains in the background.

Einsiedeln vom Hundwileren
Like almost every year, there was snow in October. But this year the snow was not only in the mountains but going down to Einsiedeln. It was on 10th of October and Einsiedeln was covered with a white layer of snow. Just for half a day or so, but it was white.
I did almost 500 km on my MTB, so time to make the last ride on it and finish the season for this year. I had a lot of fun on my new MTB and did one last time a route on the hill on the west side of the village. On top there were still the last remainings of the snow from a couple of days ago.
Its a great view from over there where you can see the whole village and the lake and the mountains in the back.
This is a great book about development. One of the best books I ever read to increase my skills necessary for my job. Not only that all the different possible architecture are described in a very understandable manner.
This book also makes clear, that you do not always need the most complicated architecture. For a simple application, a simple architecture could totally fulfill your needs.
Which leads back to one of the most important principles in software development: KISS, keep it short and simple. Software gets at the end always much more complicated that planned or expected at the beginning. Lot of developers do not fear the complexity of the source code they produce and at the end you get stuck in a messy code, impossible to have the necessary overview.
Once again I saw when reading this book, that many of the architecture, similar to design patterns are used without knowing them by name. Whatever design or architecture you select for your application, important is that you and your team know it and keep coding to the selected pattern.
Fowler also describes in a very clear example the data mapper which is a pattern I created myself years ago out of long experience. Its nice to see that I was on the right way and that a guru like Fowler describes it in a very similar way as we designed it then.
Gigathlon is an invention of Switzerland. This year there was the 10th event and every 5 years it is done a rather big event of 5 or 6 days. Gigathlon means that each day the participant has to execute 5 different types of sport: swimming, running, biking, mountain biking and inline skating. You can contribute as single, as couple or in a team of 5 or even more.
A friend of mine won a ticket for a team of maximal 15 people who had to do the 5 disciplines on all the 6 days. Means 30 disciplines in total spread to this max 15 people. We were 10 people and I was in the lucky position to do 5 disciplines: 3 times on the bike, about 250 kilometers, once running of 24 kilometers and the last day 3 kilometers swimming.
Did not know how easy or difficult it is to participate in a race every day, but some of the people do the 6 days alone, as single or as couple. That sportsmen are really heroes. One discipline per day is nothing.
Here is my new MTB. Wow, wonderful bike. My old one was also very good to drive, but it was finally dead. This broken and that broken and since the iron bike race last autumn in Einsiedeln, it was completely damaged.
So, no choice! I had to buy a new one. Question was, which one: 29” or 26”, fully or hard tail.
I tested really several bikes and at the end ended up with quite a similar than I already had: Fully 26”. The 29” I did not really like and hard tail, your ass already hurts after 10 meters.
Sold at one of the local bike stores: Kälin Velos. Bike is designed even in Switzerland. Its a Bixs!
Did a long but beautiful bike tour today: Einsiedeln, Schönenberg, Menzingen, Zug, Küssnacht, Weggis, Vitznau, Brunnen, Schwyz, Einsiedeln.
The tour is about 105 kilometers and very beautiful. Starting in Einsiedeln I often go down to Schindellegi and from there to Menzingen either directly or over Schönenberg. Both villages are on the hills above lake Zürichsee.
From Menzingen it goes down to Zug at Lake Zug. Zug is a lot deeper located than Einsiedeln, so sprint has already progressed far over there in comparison to Einsiedeln. From Zug around lake Zug back to Küssnacht, a very famous village located exactly beweet lake Zug and lake Vierwaldstättersee.
In Küssnacht I took this photo of a huge blooming bush. I don’t know its name but it was very impressive in its current blooming state. Lake Vierwaldstättersee is the most famous lake in Switzerland. Its great and I took my route from Küssnacht over Weggis and Vitznau, beautiful holiday locations to Brunnen.
In Brunnen I had already 80 kilometers and made a short break. The last 25 kilometers were more up than down and I was already quite exhausted, but managed to reach Einsiedeln 4 and a half hours after I had started.
