This year I participated the first time the marathon in Engadin. The race starts at the highest point in the valley and goes continuously down. The difference in altitude is about 200 meters.
We had to stand up at 2:30 in the morning, went with the car to Landquart, from there by train to St. Moritz and further to Maloya by bus. At approximatly 6:30 we arrived.
It was very very cold, below 15 degree I think. We put our skiers to the start point and waited in a small church where it was warm.
The race was exciting. We started in front of 5000 other people and within a few minutes thousands were before me.
But later, I were able to overtake more and more. 42 kilometers is quite a long distance and you have enough time to gain places. In the middle the route goes through a wood where the trace becomes very narrow so that very often you had to wait to come forward.
I finished below 3 hours which means that I am allowed to start two blocks earlier next year. The race is such a fun. There are more than 10.000 starters. From now on, I will try to participate every year. It´s just fun. The whole day was an adventure. We were back at home at 5 pm.
The man in the blue jacket in the middle of the foto is me.
My first time in Brussels. We had a meeting of all R&D team leaders from the whole group and it was very nice. People from US and different countries in Europe met to talk about development processes.
Brussels is a nice city. I like the people there and you can drink good beer there. I saw the first time in my live a beer containing 10 percent alcohol. We visited a restaurent where you could select between 200 different sorts of beer. Of course some of us tested the beer with 10 percent alcohol. But you do not taste it, you can only feel it the next morning, when you are still dired.
The organizer of the meeting also arranged one evening a kind of personal theater in the restaurent where we had dinner. Four or five actors performed a criminal story while we were eating and we were even integrated into the story. Was very funny.
I have been very often in Paris and I like this city. This time we had been in Bagneux, a quarter not so far from the center. Nice restaurents and bars, typical Paris. Unfortunately we saw not so much from the city itself because we had to work the whole day.
A couple of years ago I was in Paris for a training and managed to go to the city in the afternoon and hang around in some Brasseries. That was a lot of fun. And the first time, I was in Paris is at least 20 years ago. I stayed there with a girl friend for a whole week and we were able to see all the tourist locations you just have to see: Tour Eiffel, Montmartre, Louvre and so on.
We go every year to Mauterndorf, to my parents. In the last couple of year we always went there in March, when sun is already becoming stronger but snow is still on the montains. March is the best time for skiing in my opinion. In March, there is the most snow of the whole winter, and there is normally the most sun shining in winter.
We had luck this year, the first few days were really bretty: Sun and snow! As I am not used to do skiing, the first day was quite hard for me. We went down the slopes, but I had not the fun I normally feel when skiing. But the second day was alrady better and on the third day, my love for skiing was back.
The picture is from Mauterndorf, there is a nice skiing area in this village. We were there on our first day and took a break in one of the huts for a beer and tipical Austrian food. Very nice!
Since I have an iPhone, my wish was to create my own iPhone application. But not so easy as I immediately saw.
First, you have to have a MAC where you can install the iPhone development studio. This was the biggest problem. I buyed an old MAC on ebay but found out, that the MAC I had bought was to old. And after three months it died.
Months later I had the opportunity to buy a Netbook from a friend. And the guy had installed MAC OS on this Netbook. So the biggest hurdle was taken.
The rest was quite simple. For an experienced developer it is not so hard, to learn a new development language within a few days. And after two week or so, I were able to publish my first application.
The application is similar to something I already did years ago for PCs. It is a software which draws a triangle. You can move the corners of the triangle and the most important special points, lines and circles of a triangle are drawn.
This year I was also able to finish all races which belong to the “Best of three” championship in Einsiedeln.
There is the ski marathon, the “Sihlsee” running race and the “Iron bike” race. Only a few people participate at all three races. I did it also two years ago.
The ski marathon yesterday was very could. I did only the half marathon. The full distance would be to hard for me. But was a lot of fun!
The ski marathon trace in Einsiedeln is quite exhausting. It goes up and down the whole time, there is no time where it goes down for a longer time. Last year I expected to be able to do the whole distance, but this year I knew that this would not have been possible.
It was very cold and very strong. The snow was much better than last year. Last year I started the first time for this race. But I could not remember how hard it really is. I thought and told my friends, that it is quite easy, not so much up and down. But in reality it is the contrary. I goes down and on the other side quite steep up. There is one spot where it goes up so fast, that you can not scate but you have to walk like a frog. I did not remember all this. Maybe the route was slightly different last year.
I were behind a frind the whole race, always at a distance of between 10 and 100 meters. But I were not able to fetch him until 100 meters before the finish when his foreman and he himself took the wrong side of a branch. I just wanted to follow them when the bystanders called. So I were able to correct my course early enought, but my friend already was gone a couple of meters, so he had to stop and turn and he then finish a few secounds after me.
This year winter is not coming. It is end of November and still very warm. Yesterday I climbed the “Kleiner Mythen” and made a photo back to Einsiedeln. In the background you can see Einsiedeln and part of lake “Shilsee”.
This mountain is much more dangerous than its taller brother “Grosser Mythen”. You have to pass several spots where it’s possible to fall down. Normally I don’t fear the route, but this year I really were happy when I stood on top of the mountain, maybe because I am out of training.
But yesterday I did a new personal record: exactly 60 minutes from the parking place to the top. For going down I have exactly 40 minutes. Last year I have 5 minutes more!
The mountain on the picture is “Haggenspitz”, the third in this group. Only a few people are climbing this mountain. There is no official route and it is almost invisible. I were there a couple of years ago, also end of November. I think it must have been at least 4 years ago, when it was also very warm in November.
